It’s been a little over three weeks since we found out we will be adding another boy to the Griffith clan! The day before our ultrasound I already had my paint swatches and fabric samples ready. Proof that nesting has taken over the logical side of my brain, because I was in the midst of preparing for the Indie Trunk Show I decided to paint our newest additions nursery.
When I broke the news about my master plan of painting the nursery to my husband he pretty much choked, fell out of his chair, and fainted at the same time. Why the dramatic reaction? Let’s take a peek at what we were dealing with here.
Yeah. A total disaster area. Our 3-year old son, Axton, has not occupied this bedroom since October of 2013. Since then it has become the dumping grounds for anything and everything I haven’t wanted to deal with organizing, donating, or care to look at anymore.
I promised I would have it in working order and paint ready in a matter of a few hours. Five donation bags, 2 trash bags, and a Craigslist posting to sell the daybed, we had a room ready for painting.
The hubs was in disbelief I was able to deliver on my promise. Frankly, I was too. I already had a paint color waiting in the wings, Volcanic Ash by Olympic in their low VOC, paint and primer in one formula, ONE Interior. Since I really had to sell my husband on completing this project during an unbelievably hectic week I needed a paint that would make our painting project a breeze. ONE Interior did not disappoint. It was perfect for painting the nursery for so many reasons!
ONE Interior is super affordable compared to other brands of paint and primer formulas. At $25.00 for a gallon compared to the usual $35-$40 it was a bargain in my book.
Olympic ONE boasts extreme hiding power and rich colors, which I put to the test on these walls. I was painting over an extremely dark brown wall and then 3 very light colored walls, both can be a challenge to cover. With two quick coats of paint, all of the stubborn walls were covered without a trace of the old colors in sight.
ONE Interior formula is low in VOCs. Which is so important to me as a pregnant mamma.
If you are from Child Protective Services, please move past this photo. Yes, move along… Nothing to see here.
While painting the walls I found some rather disturbing stains on the old paint. Yes, I potty trained my son while he was in this room, so I don’t even want to think about what this could be. No amount of scrubbing could get these stains off the wall. So when the folks at Lowe’s let me know Olympic ONE is extremely durable as well as scrubbable, well, let’s just say I was sold. With another boy joining this household and the experience of raising one boy under my motherhood belt, anything that is durable get’s my vote. Plus, ONE has the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Honestly, I had no idea what the seal meant until I researched it a little further. Basically, Good Housekeeping will replace, repair the product, or refund the purchase of a product that bears their seal that proves to be defective. Do you think The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval covers questionable stains on the wall? I don’t know but I am willing to put it to the test!
ONE was so smooth to work with and the color was as vibrant and true as the paint swatch has shown.
If we had painted the first coat during the day and under better lighting I think we would have gotten away with only painting one coat. But the next morning we spied a few spots we had missed so we decided to paint a second coat. Yes, over the dark brown wall the coverage was amazing! And my husband was thrilled he wasn’t thrown down the rabbit hole of 4 coats of paint!
2 coats of paint later we were finished.and we still had ¼ of the gallon remaining! That is some serious bang for your buck!
I am so pleased with the room already! Volcanic Ash is a gorgeous gray with a hint of blue, just perfect for the Vintage Pow Wow theme I am envisioning. It’s a sophisticated twist on a worn pair of blue jeans.
I am hoping all of our nursery projects will be as easy as this one is. It’s got me feeling like we are off to a great start!
Even big brother came in to give the new room a test drive. After a quick performance of ‘Let It Go’ I would say it gets his seal of approval as well!
