Last Thursday night we hosted an Intro To Calligraphy Class here at The Makery inside of my boutique, Spruced Cooperative. Not only do I teach classes here at The Makery, but we also have featured artists teach their passion as well.
Having the ability AND the space to host other artists teach at an affordable price was such a priority to me when I was looking for a commercial space to lease.
I remember when I first starting teaching classes in 2010 I had to start out in a warehouse because there was NO WHERE ON GODS GREEN EARTH for me to teach furniture painting classes. ( Ok maybe a dramatization translating into no place to teach within a 20 mile radius of my house).
Luckily, a year later, The Edmond Fine Arts Institute allowed me to start teaching at their state-of-the-art facility for a discounted rate in exchange for donations and social media promotion. I felt like I had hit the jackpot being able to teach there. I could have never imagined I would ever own my own studio space!
So here I am today, teaching in my own studio space, inside my boutique, and empowering other women (and men) to teach THEIR passion at a super affordable rate.
I choose to believe when you have a servant’s heart good things happen. I give the glory to HIM because if you would have asked me 7 years ago if this is where I would be I would have turned red in the face and peed my pants a little bit.
But enough about my journey.
Let’s get on with the fancy lettering!
The class was taught by the ever so talented Laura Jarvis from Pink Ink. As soon as she booked her class I told her she HAD to save me a space because I have been desperate to learn how to write all fancy-like.
The class was full and so diverse – which I LOVED! Anywhere from Middle-schooleres, College Students, Moms, and women of maturity and wisdom! Regardless of age, each one had a blast!
Upon entering the class, Laura from Pink Ink, had adorable place settings and personlized name tags for each of us. A pretty presentation is the way to my heart!
She also gave us each custom lettered cards to send to a bestie or to tape to your mirror for daily encouragement. It was so personalized and really made the class memorable. #itsthelittlethangs
We learned two different techniques, brush lettering with a calligraphy pen (think marker with a different tip). We were also taught fancy lettering with a pointed nib dipped in ink. A nib is the part of a quill, dip pen or fountain pen which comes into contact with the writing surface in order to deposit ink.
It’s basically the metal part of the pen that makes you feel like you are writing George Washington’s Memoir.
Translation: I felt very presidential while writing. It inspired me to write my autobiography in an old school pointed nib fashion.
Which we know will never happen.
A few thinks about Laura Jarvis from Pink Ink.
SHE IS A ROCKSTAR INSTRUCTOR!
She would beat me in an arm wrestling match because she has FOUR KIDS.
The stress of teaching a class doesn’t even make her break a sweat compared to raising four littles.
She gives practical, applicable, tips and tricks for having success with Hand Lettering. She gave each person one-on-one time (which is really important to me as a teacher and a student).
Bottom Line: You will feel right at home with Laura as your hand letting spirit guide.
The younger students were by far the MOST talented out of the bunch. I think it’s because they hand write in school much more than us typing adults do. This precious girl whom I sat next to made me feel like I had Doctor’s handwriting compared to her gorgeous, flowing, and natural abilities!
As a bonus, a former custom furniture client turned friend, attended the class and sat right next to me! What a treat. But we were both jelly of her daughter’s talent.
Guess who is addressing their Christmas cards this year????
I loved the whole experience of the class and I would totally take one again! Partly because I loved the course content and partly because Laura is such a light of joy to learn from.
Laura sent us home with tons of supplies and lots of free product to practice with at home. I have already been testing my new skills in our store displays and I can’t wait to see how far I come in just a few weeks of putting my new skills to the test!
Of course, in true Allison-has-no-boundaries fashion I did a FB Live during the class so you can take a peek inside for yourself. Feel free to ignore my prechosen constipated facial expression by YouTube.
Laura is teaching a journaling class at The Makery on Thursday August 10th. This class is for Bible Journaling, Calendar Journaling, or even regular journaling. I even have a friend coming who is ob-to-the-sessed with Bullet Journaling who is attending! Sign up so you don’t miss out! You can enroll right here!
