Any idea where I can find silver pigment? Also, where do you generally find your bargains?

  • Darla says:

I have a had a client tell me that she got water on something and some of the paint came off. Did I not put enough wax on. I got the piece back and put satin finish on it but I don’t always do that. Thanks for all your help. Darla

  • Thank you so much for this opportunity! Anyone else I’ve asked recently has suggested I purchase their ebook or want to charge me $30/half hour for just some friendly advice! I’m opening my new business/store in a month’s time and just want to know what your best avenue of exposure has been? I realize we are from different parts of the country, but there isn’t anything like what I do around here, so no one local to ask! Any tips for those first few months? I will have an actual retail location with a workshop area in the back. I’m intrigued by your “DIY upholster” classes as well. How did you get started with that? I think it would be a fun thing for me to offer in the future.

    Thanks,
    Jessica

P.S. I found inspiration from your blog posts about how you came to the decision to quit your high profile job and do this hobby/passion full time. Congratulations on (obviously) making it work!

I love your story it’s so inspiring and i’m kind of in the same predicament right now. Not sure what to do; i know what my heart wants but i’m still not sure…. God Bless You!
I have one simple question in regards to painting furniture. I live in San Antonio, Texas, and my mother and I opened a small re-sale business in Uvalde, Texas. I decided to start painting some furniture and she’s creatively working on her crafts. I’ve finished four projects and already sold two, so i’m super excited about this…. Anyhow, would you mind letting me know how to paint in between the lines of furniture pieces? I have an old antique dresser that was already painted and distressed in black, but the designs are flat carved (sort of like your silver chest) and i want to bring them out in white: How in the world do i do this? Is it with a dremmel and then repaint again???? Please help…

    • Ok, I am sad to say that I just had to Google “What is a Dremmel tool?” which then made me feel silly and I had to share! Anyway, I am not sure what you mean by painting in between the lines?

Bought some old furniture with a vanne laquer finish, can i just paint with regualr semi-gloss paint or should i prime it first?

  • I noticed you’re also a gal of faith. Me too. I love what you do, especially how you took the leap of faith and trusted God to lead you, one step at a time, as you followed the passions He planted within you and pursued Refunk My Junk on a full time basis. I’m currently in a similar situation, trying to discern how to incorporate women’s life purpose coaching with my passion for refunking junk. I think it’s kind of cool how God has given me overlapping/similar interests, but I’m sort of stuck on the “business planning” part of it. Any tips for how how to craft a business mission/purpose statement that combines wanting to repurpose physical junk while helping women repurpose their emotional junk too? I can’t seem to get past this one obstacle (i.e. articulating the nature/purpose of the business in writing) and it’s a critical one, being that it should capture the entire essence in a sentence or two. Thought you might have some good insights being that you have a background in banking and junking! Thanks for your time and your inspiration! I love your funk!

  • Carin says:

Hello! We have so many parallels in our lives it’s scary. I worked in the banking/lending world as well and felt I needed to make a change. I’m currently a WAHM that has been focusing on a marketing/web design career for 3 years but I feel my enthusiasm and excitement fading fast. I recently started restoring furniture and feel a fire burning in my belly that I haven’t felt in a loooong time. I’ve tried selling things on Craigslist but the hits are few and far between. My idea situation would be to start exactly how you did by renting a space in a shop and then eventually transitioning in to my own place. I have the marketing background to make my business grow once I have my own place but I’m finding it hard to get into places to rent spaces. Do you have any advice on finding places to rent? I live in a fairly populated area, the San Francisco Bay Area, so it shouldn’t be this hard to find a place. Any advice on where to start?

Thank you for listening and being such an amazing mentor!

    Carin

  • I hope its not too late for this, I just found your blog while I tried googling my question! I’ve been painting furniture for a few months now..just painting what I find here or there and then putting it in my antique booth. The store I sell at does a lot of wholesale because we keep our prices low comparatively to other antique stores. So, I do feel like I probably sell my painted furniture too low, but I have to think of what my customers will pay.

I had someone interested in purchasing a dresser from me (which I have priced at $49), and then thought they’d want to have it painted. How do you pick a reasonable price for this? Square footage, time, or what? I told him an extra $50, but he thought that was too expensive. Is it?
