It’s no secret I love to decoupage different mediums on to furniture. My most popular blog post, for three years running, is this decoupage tutorial. I guess I am not the only one who loves it!
I decided to try the same decoupage technique with paper napkins. At our Lost & Foundry Warehouse sale everyone was asking me about this dresser and how I got this look. If our customers were curious about this technique I knew I HAD to share with you.
This little four drawer dresser was nothing to get excited about. It didn’t have any interesting lines, was pretty beat up, and had some water stains. But after reading this blog post from Sweet Pickins about how to use napkins to get a weathered wood floral finish with paper napkins I knew I needed this dresser in my life.
I would hop on over to Sweet Pickins blog for her full tutorial on how to get this look. But you basically use 3-ply napkins, peel the back two layers off of the napkins, and using Mod Podge, stick them to the front of the dresser drawer.
I used these Meddela paper napkins from Ikea that I had been using on my coffee bar. I had been staring at them for months, thinking how the little coral colored circles would be perfect with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Apron Strings.
I painted the entire body of the dresser in Apron Strings and sealed it with hemp oil.
This was my first time trying the napkin technique so it didn’t turn out perfectly but I am okay with that. The imperfections make it look even more authentically old.
Since the dresser’s wood was pretty dry the milk paint didn’t chip and flake away like it normally does. It did give beautiful crackle in spots.
I sealed the drawers in Antiquing Wax after I distressed them with a sanding block.
These adorable aluminum canisters are from Lavender and Lemon Market. They are a French set with embossed descriptions like Farine: Flour, Pates: Pasta, a Epices for spices. PS: If you need these in your life (ahem, you do!) then shoot her a FB message.
I purchased new knobs from Hob Lob to complete the look.
We stopped by Ikea on our way home from Great Wolf Lodge last weekend and I bought all the napkins. Napkins for everyone!
If you try this technique I would love to see your projects! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or send me a FB message! Happy napkin hoarding!
