Thrift Store Finds

Thrifted Bookcase Styling

Last week I recapped creating a faux wallpaper backing effect in my living room built-ins.  I also mentioned that I was on a tight $30.00 budget for the entire project, which means I had to rely on refunking what I already owned as well as scoring some $1.00 find at my local Thrift Store.  Let’s take a deeper peek into my thrifted bookcase styling.

1.  Hobby Lobby Horse Head Bookend I already owned made over with spray paint.

2. Books wrapped in wrapping paper to give a little extra pop of color.

3. Already owned this Bible verse art but attached it with Command Strips.

5.  Estate Sale Ironstone

6.  .99 Goodwill Glass owl spray painted white.

7.  Anthropologie Vase given to me as a gift from my bestie.

8.  Brass deer figurines from the $1.00 bin at a flea market, painted in Santa Fe Turquoise.

9.  Framed monogram “G” Kids Art, courtesy of my 2.5 year old.  Frame from Goodwill.

10.  This Owl was a resin garden statue I already owned.  A quick coat of spray paint makes it look like glass.

11.  Young House Love’s Book.  Gotta throw in a shout out for the inspiration for my project!

12.  Target clearance silver vase, already owned.

13.  $4.00 Horse bookends from the flea market.

17.  More Goodwill framed artwork for a personal touch.

18.  Vintage fan from a Flea Market.

19.  $1 garage sale art that I bought along with this art.  Repainted the frame in Kissimmee Orange.

Can you believe I got a whole new look for under $30?  Thanks to refunking a bunch of stuff I already owned, some spray paint I had on hand, and a bunch of $1.00 Goodwill and Flea Market items.

Let’s take a gander at the Before & After again…

Thrift in the City: Bargain Thrift

Thrift in the City is my review of local Oklahoma City and Metro Area thrift shops and spots to find antique and furniture deals in OKC.  This week’s review is of Bargain Thrift in Oklahoma City.

Bargain Thrift has two locations in Oklahoma City, one on NW 16th & Meridian Ave. and the second location on Western & Hefner.  They also have a location in Tulsa on I-44 & 49th West Ave in the Town West Center.  This review is from the Western & Hefner store, although the store at 16th & Meridian is much larger and the clerk at the counter was convinced the Meridian Store has better stuff.  I’ll give you my two cents when I go.
Enough of the logistics, let’s get on with it!
I go to this thrift store about once a week because it’s sorta close to my office.  I love going thrifting in the middle of the day, wearing my snazzy suit, heels, and carrying my Tory Burch bag.  Especially when some dude with his butt crack hanging out of his pants asks me for money.  So now I just leave my purse in the car.  Plus, it gives me an extra arm for shopping.  Bonus!
Here are the most qualified candidates from this shopping trip.
I almost bought this sterling silver candelabra for $6.99, but it was missing several of the crystals so I opted not too.  If it’s marked down next week, I will probably change my mind.
I loved this heavy and HUGE metal pear.  I think it’s charming and would look great on my bookshelf in my living room or in my booth for sale.  It was $9.99 and I didn’t buy it either and I am already regretting it!
Look at this freakin’ huge remote!  Am I the only one that is always searching for the remote in my bed sheets at night?  Nope, didn’t buy it either, just thought it was funny.
How about a pink lame’ dress?  Ha.
I bought this chair for my Mom at $12.99.  She bought a dining room set for her breakfast room and it only had three chairs and this is gonna match perfectly!  Well, almost perfectly.  She painted the set black and distressed it, so you won’t even be able to tell.
Some $9.99 Uggs in size 7.
Not my size.
Prada shoes for 50% off of $89.99.
 Not my style.  Darn.

The last candidate was this chair.  It wasn’t priced, so the rule at Bargain Thrift is:  If it isn’t priced it goes into the back room for repricing and they won’t sell it to you. I tried to negotiate with them, but no can do.  At least I tried, right?
I guess I wasn’t in the shopping mood because I didn’t buy much!
My hubs would be proud!
Bargain Thrift has color coded pricing.  Almost all of the items I mentioned were priced at original price.  Every Monday they do their markdowns before they open and all original price items become 50% off, all 50% off become 75% off and so forth.
The clerk told me that there is a line at the front door on Mondays starting at 8:30 am for first dibs on the new markdowns.  I am not that hardcore, so I am sure you won’t see me in line!  But bravo if you are that dedicated!
I was also told that the employees are not allowed to shop at any of the locations so customers can have first pick and all of their inventory.  Love that!
What I love the most is that Bargain Thrift is also Donationpickup.org, which means that they will come pick up your donated items from you.  I have personally used to pick up furniture and donated items.  They are on time and take everything and anything!  You can also choose which charity your items are donated to (or really the proceeds of the sale of the items go to).  They are contracted with Prevent Blindness, Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled (my personal fave), and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma.
Pat yourself on the back because you can get rid of your junk and get warm fuzzys at the same time!

You can schedule your pick-up by calling 866-OKPICKUP or by visiting Donation Pickup’s website.

Bargain Thrift is one of my favorite thrifty spots to hit so they get an A rating in my book.  (Even though I wished they would negotiate on their prices, but the markdowns usually make up for it)

Where should I shop and review next? Email me your favorite shopping spot and I will hit it up!
Happy Thrifting!

Tops 10 Apps My Business Can’t Live Without

Getting an iPhone has been life changing for me and my business! It is so handy and allows me to check so many things off of my ‘to-do’ list while I am on the go… And let me tell you, with a full-time job, a small business, and an 18 month-old, anything that makes my life easier is worth it!
So I thought I would compile a quick list of the apps I use for my business and maybe they will help you save some precious time in your day too! All of these are available for Android phones as well, so for all you anti-iPhone people (like my husband) I am not leaving you out either!  Plus, I root for both teams, because I use a Samsung Tablet instead of an iPad.
1.Sherwin Williams ColorSnap
   Cost: FREE!
Fall in love with that Peacock Blue Sweater you bought and want a piece of furniture to match?  Turn it into a paint color with a touch of a button using ColorSnap from Sherwin Williams!  Using your phone’s built in camera, simply take a picture and it uploads and color matches to one of Sherwin-Williams 1,500 paint colors.  It even saves the colors for you to refer to for future projects!
2.  Behr ColorSmart
     Cost: FREE
Same concept as ColorSnap but also has the added feature of showing you coordinating colors and also lets you upload a picture of your room or furniture and apply the color so you will see how it looks
3.  Craigslist
Cost:  Some are free and some are not.  These are the ones I have personally used and would recommend.
Craigsphone
Cost: FREE!
Post, search, and email potential buyers and sellers. The downside is that it won’t save your most common searches or listings you want to follow up on. Still good if you want the basics and it’s FREE!
CraigsPro
Cost: .99
All the same as the free addition, but it saves your most common searches and tells you the last time you ran the search.  All saves postings you want to look at later, but the downside is that it doesn’t remove them from the list once the seller has taken the item down.  It also has a little more advanced search options than the free addition as well.
Side Note:  This is the one I currently use.
CraigsPro+
Cost: $1.99
All the same as both of the above but also sends you Push Notifications when new items are listed under your saved search settings. 50 Push Notifications are free and then there is a charge for additional Push Notifications after 50. This one seems good, but I get overwhelmed with all of those Push Notifications and I feel I am fully capable of searching on my own… Hey maybe I miss a deal or two, but I stresses me out when my phone is constantly dinging!
4.  ThriftBuddy
     Cost:FREE!

I really hesitated sharing this one, I don’t want to give away ALL of my thrifty secrets! But, I figure, there is enough funky junk for us all, so why not? This is my FAVORITE app out of all the apps in the world! This app allows you to look up thrift store locations by proximity, city, state, or zip, mark locations as your favorites, list yourself as a shopper of locations, review locations to recommend, and much more!
I love this when I am out of town or not familiar with the area and it will point me to where the thrift stores are! LOVE IT!
5. Yard Sale Mapper
Cost:FREE!
Maps out garage sales strategically for you to maximize your time!
6.  Garage Sale Tracker
Cost: FREE!
7.  Estate Sale Finder
     Cost: $1.99
Gives you the address & description of local estate sales.  It doesn’t list every estate sale, so I am not sure where they get their info from, but it’s still a good app.  Also includes a map, and you know some of those Estate Sales tend to be off the beaten path.
8.  Paypal
Cost: FREE!
I collect deposits for my workshops via PayPal, so this allows me to see who has paid,
transfer money to my business account, and even invoice someone, all from my phone!  This one is a MUST!
9.  iXpenseIt Lite:
     Cost: FREE
This app helps me keep track of my expenses. Generally I use my business debit card for business purchases, but in the Garage Sale and Thrifting business – cash is KING, so I have to make frequent ATM withdrawals. This allows me to keep track of what I purchased with my cash so the IRS will stay off of my back. And I won’t have to claim that expense as Owner Income or Draws.
 10.  Pinterest
        Cost: Free

Nuff Said.  You can read about my pinning addiction here.
What’s your favorite app you can’t live without?  Tell me and I will download it.  I am an app addict and I am pretty sure Steve Jobs has my bank account on auto-debit at this point. Hope you find a few of these handy and taking your junk hunting to the next level!

Turquoise Console Before & After

It’s Cinco De Mayo and since Turquoise is kind of Espanol-ish I thought I would post this oldie but a goodie… I am catchin’ up on some before & afters for The Look Book and I can’t believe I never posted this little baby!

 Before:
After:
I was able to use the original hardware… Which is a bonus and almost never happens!  It sold this on Cragslist during the SNOMG!, Snomagedden, Snorrible, a.k.a. some snow in Oklahoma.  I gave a little discount to the first person who braved the weather and showed up!
Hope everyone is having a great Cinco De Mayo… The BooBoo didn’t nap much at daycare today so he went down at 6:30pm… Meaning it’s Senor Tequila’s for the Griffith’s celebration!  (Which, I despise Sr. Tequila’s ever since their food/service made me cry during my pregnancy, but that is a post for a whole other blog and a whole other time! Ha!)

Before & After: An End Table

Before:

Missing knob, water stains on top… Has sort of a ‘crack house’ feel to it.
(Seriously, not like I’ve ever been in one, but if I did, I bet this table would be smack dab in the middle of it!  And on a side note: I think I have been watching too much Intervention.)
After:
Notice the fancy fabric lined drawers?

Remember these knobs I got on my trip to Los Angeles?  Well, here they are!

I am happy with this red painted end-table makeover!  From crack to class! (Clearly, no more A&E for me this week!)

Before & After: A Chair

Before:

After:

Don’t you love the fabric?  So fun and ready to shake up any design scheme!  I’m totally addicted to painting anything and everything turquoise!

Oh Say Can You See…?

I bought this little patriotic piece at Goodwill and I immediately was excited…

Before
After
See what I was excited about?  I am in love with peacock feathers!
Modge Podge + scrapbook paper = Refunked!
On a side note: I am now on the hunt for peacock wrapping paper!  I have been scouring online, any and all stores, and no luck!  If you find some PLEASE buy some for me or at least tell me where you found it!  When I can’t find exactly what I want I obsess over it! Argh!  In the meantime I will just look at my tray and hope for a whole roll of this fabulousness!

Look what I am working on!

Here is a little peek at what I’m working on…  U.G.L.Y!

This is just a few of my pieces… My garage is looking more and more like Santa’s workshop every day.  If only I had a couple of elves!

Thank you Allison D.!

Warning!  2 people named Allison = 1 fabulous makeover!  (For clarification purposes I will call this client Allison D.)  Allison D. drove all the way from Perkins, OK for her private lesson!  She is a newly-wed on a budget and wanted to know more about how to Refunk all of her awesome thrift store finds.  And let me tell you, I could learn a thing or two from her and her eye for a steal! She bought this table at the Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store in Stillwater for $1.00!  Yes, you heard me right.  ONE DOLLAR!  I know, I am jealous too!

Here is her piece BEFORE:
(please disregard my workshop/garage/and complete disregard for setting the stage for this picture!)

Allison D. kindly reminded me to take this picture because we were so busy talking that I forgot!  So the doors are already off.

Here she is with an electric sander getting started!

And here it is after!  GORGEOUS! A few words that come to mind: French, Shabby, Beachy, ADORABLE! (And expensive looking)

The knobs on the doors were amazing.  We played with some acrylic paint and got this awesome patina look.

Thank you for being a great client, Allison D.!  I can’t wait to hear all (and be even more jealous) of your future projects and thrifty finds!
