It’s birthday party time at our house! Our oldest turned the big number 5 yesterday! How did that happen?!? How time has flown! He was beside himself, he was so excited!
Isn’t he cute?!?
So, as he turns 5 we enter the months of birthdays at our house with my oldest’s birthday party on Saturday and my youngest having his birthday around Thanksgiving. I LOVE planning the parties! My husband laughs at me and tells me that the kids could care less, especially since up to now it’s pretty much just been family at our parties! But I love fixing all the details and making it fun and different. I’ll be sharing my 5 year olds birthday party next week, but for now I’ll show you some highlights of past birthday parties at our house.
1st birthday’s are always fun, right? This cake was made with love by me and my brother. A Dr. Seuss themed first birthday for my oldest, Kaisson, was filled with bright colors, book characters, and quirky items such as the wire and bead cake topper. It was our first experience with fondant and we stuck with the easy stuff…shapes.
My youngest, Kerith, had a circus party for his 1st birthday…complete with liners/toppers from JoAnn’s and Dollar Tree clown topper. This cake was by far the prettiest…and you know why? It’s because I had my special weapon, my mother in law, there to frost!
For my oldest’s 2nd birthday he was completely in love with all things Sesame Street. So, I created character cupcakes with custom cupcake liners (that my brother created), and picked up hats and plates from the local party store. For days after the party we heard, “Elmo! Elmo! Elmo!”
These next two were 3rd birthday parties…one very elaborate and one very simple. All Kaisson wanted was cars on his cake…didn’t matter what, just cars. So, I could have gotten away with something much simpler. And you know, sometimes simple does the trick. For Kerith’s 3rd birthday I was pregnant and sick. My idea of a Monsters party went right out the window. We ended up ordering a Nemo Ice Cream Cake from Baskin Robbins and calling it good. The kid could not have been more thrilled. Thank goodness!!!
Last years birthday was a pirate party. My mom found this adorable ship and cupcake liners/toppers at TJMaxx for the cupcakes. I just LOVE TJMaxx!!! Don’t you?
I love getting to create something special for my boys…but what’s even better is letting them know that they are a special gift given to us by God. That they were fearfully and wonderfully made for great things! Some friends I grew up with just started something great for birthday’s called The Birthday Blessing. This is what their website says, “The Birthday Blessing serves as a vehicle for families to speak words of affirmation and encouragement to children. On each of the 7 days leading up to their birthday, your family will sit around the table, look at God’s Word, and participate in activities that invest in the future of the child.” Kaisson has LOVED reading through his each night and getting to do the little activities that go along with it. And what a blessing to be able to read scripture with your children and pray blessings over them!
Off I go to finish all the details for Saturday’s party and hope the weather holds up! Otherwise we’ll have some wet, sad superheroes!
