I know ya’ll probably think I am the cheapest person evah based on my blog. I buy tons of stuff at Thrift Stores, I don’t think I have ever bought a piece of furniture brand new (except Axton’s Crib, our couch, and mattresses. I do have some sanitary boundaries.) , I clip coupons like Honey Boo Boo’s Mom, and even rock an Easter Dress from a Yard Sale.
Believe it or not I do have some items I spend money on that would be considered “splurges” by some. So let’s take a look at what we splurge on and how I mentally justify it. Believe me, I can justify just about anything.
High Quality Basic Clothes
I don’t mind spending $75+ on a classic pair of jeans, shoes, or purses because they will last so much longer than their cheaper counterpart. And stay in style longer than a cheapo trendy item from Forever 21.
I pair classic items with cheapo jewelry and scarves from places like Sassy Steals , Groopdealz, Urban Peach, and I obviously try to shop local as much as possible in the retail stores we rent space from.
An item that was handmade takes a lot of time and expertise to make. And it supports a small business.
So it’s worth it to me to pay more. For example, these shelves I purchased for our master bedroom makeover. It’s like someone who doesn’t want to pay the price tag for hand painted furniture. If you would prefer to pay less then Ikea or Target might be a more affordable option for furniture.
After I had a baby and turned 30 my skin turned into an adolescent teenage girl’s. I have been using Rodan & Fields Unblemish for about 6 months and I can see a huge difference.
It is about $140.00 every 2 months but I think it’s worth every penny. I am not saying this because I sell it or anything – the girl I bought mine from quit selling it – so I don’t even know who my R&F “person” is.
I skip pedicures during the winter months but during the summer those 45 minutes of quiet and foot rubbing bliss are priceless.
I have someone clean my house every 3 weeks. It’s $95.00 and this is something I am always tempted to cancel. When I worked full-time at a traditional job I never hesitated about paying for this but now that I work from home I still feel hesitant to have someone clean my house for me.
Every time I want to cancel it my husband reminds me that if I didn’t have someone clean our house I would be spending my work-time at home cleaning instead of working. So in the long-run I feel like I make more money spending the time it takes me to clean the house then have someone do it for me.
Maybe it’s a complex I have from not having cable as a kid, but I can’t live without HBO. I wish they had a cable package with just BRAVO & HBO and then I would never have to watch anything else.
Quality Paint & Quality Paint Brushes
If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time you know I get on my soap box about this but it’s because it’s true. If you buy cheap and crappy paint and paint brushes your painting with look cheap and crappy too.
When you invest in quality paint and paint brushes your projects will shine. Don’t sell yourself short.
Hair Cut & Color
I had no idea how important my hair was to me. But it is. You wear it everyday so spending a little extra is worth it. My new girl charges me about $135.00 for a cut and color.
Since my hair is a lot shorter now I have to get a trim about every 6 weeks but can stretch the hair color to about every 3 or 4 months.
I tried to come up with a list of 10 things I splurge on but I couldn’t come up with any more than 8.
I am STILL working on my tax stuff this week and this time of year always makes me reevaluate our budget and see where we can shave off some expenses. These are line items year after year, I am white knuckling, hanging on to. Maybe someday I will get okay with these splurges.
