Happy Friday Friends! I am all about some DIY decorating but when it comes to my own home, well… Let’s just say it’s been a little neglected this past year. This blog post should just be an open letter to my husband confessing all of the projects I have planned for us this year.
I have not blogged about my own home very much because my personal projects have taken a backseat to running my business. I think that in 5 years this is the FIRST blog post I have EVER written about our home with full photos and a mini-tour. Crazy huh?
This year I am committing to completing some long overdue decorating and making my home a priority for once! So, to make sure I follow through with the intentions of decorating my casa I wanted to share my home goals for 2014 with you. I know you all will keep me accountable!
A little history on our home: In February we will have owned it for 7 years. The previous owners had it custom built so there are a lot of unique features which are a decorating blessing and a curse. When you walk in our front door it opens up to one large room that consists of 2 dining rooms, 1 living room, and our kitchen. It’s one large “great room” that has a tile walkway in the middle of it (see below).
I have a love/hate relationship with some of the unique features in our house.
I love the open floor plan.
The raised tile walkway is unique but it sort of defeats the purpose of an open floor plan because it limits how you can rearrange furniture.
I also love the columns but they make photographing difficult.
First up is our entry way. I would love to incorporate a faux mudroom bench to add on to the existing seating in here. Or I might repurpose a headboard into a coat rack like this.
I also really hate my front door.
If I won the lottery I would replace it. But since that’s not gonna happen I might just paint it in a fun color.
Our dining room has made a lot of progress in the past few years. Here is what it used to look like.
We removed the ugly wallpaper and border, had the walls textured, and painted it the same color as the rest of the living area. I painted the dining room table in Ironstone and my mom and I sewed the drapes.
I need to paint the dining room chairs and recover the seats. I already have a plan for this and I will share it with you next week.
Next up is our kitchen. Here is what it looked like when we moved in 7 years ago.
The only thing we have done in here is replace the countertops with granite and replace the sink with a stainless steel sink and faucet. The granite was expensive but I would spend that money all over again. You can tell what a difference it made.
This is the year I am going to paint my kitchen cabinets. They are a pickled wood finish which tends to have a pinkish hue to them. I despise it. I am thinking of painting them in a wash in Vintage White. I am also going to have a roman shade made for above the sink and replace the light fixture with canned lighting to match the other lights in the room.
If I win the lottery goal: Get a stainless steel refrigerator. I just can’t justify buying a new one when our current one works fine. But I will admit, sometimes I slam the door extra hard in hopes of it falling apart. My hissy fit hasn’t worked yet.
This is the breakfast nook/2nd dining room. I don’t love the glass top table in here but it makes for easy cleanup when working on craft projects so it will just have to stay. But the light fixture has finally got to come down. The previous owners had a pool table in here. And YES, it’s still up. I will most likely have it replaced with canned lighting as well since this large room has so many things hanging from the ceiling.
A stretch goal is to paint the wet bar in the same color as the kitchen cabinets. It’s not a high priority but it would be nice to check that off my list too.
This awkward space needs to be revamped and the frame is a little outdated. Not sure what I am going to do here yet.
The drapes in the living area are getting replaced soon! These are the original drapes from when the house was built in 1999. Sad! They have never been my style but I have always been afraid to price custom curtains and I also didn’t want to lose any light by covering up the windows with drapes. With help from Hayden on fabric selection and my friend Sonya from Beyond the Screen Door we have already picked out fabric and are having them made.
So I will get to check that one off the list soon! Buh-Bye plaid valances!
I would like to get a new rug and repaint the coffee table.
Here is our BEAST of a television. This was a fancy TV when HDTV first came to town. But now it is way too large and takes up a ton of space. We are considering splurging on a flat screen and hanging it above the fireplace, which would open up that entire wall. TVs usually go on sale around the Super Bowl, so I am going to see if we can find a good deal soon. I have a plan for that back wall. It’s been sad and empty for years.
A stretch goal would be to repaint the built-ins and fireplace and remove the wooden appliqué. It’s too traditional for my style. I would love to retile the fireplace into something more fun. But that is way down on the list.
So there is my list! It feels freeing to get it all down but overwhelming to think about all I need to do in our home! I know it will always be a work-in-progress and I tend to be a snail when it comes to decorating. I love the process and I would rather wait to find the perfect pieces then settle for something I don’t love.
